Descripción/Descrição
About the Book:

This is the market-leading  reference and textbook dealing with the scientific analysis of human skeletal remains recovered from archaeological sites. This book is titled ‘The Biological Anthropology of the Human Skeleton’ in order to recognize the place of the author’s within the broader subject of anthropology and to maintain the emphasis on biological research. The content of the book demonstrates how anthropologists examine the interaction of biological and cultural factors shaping the physical adaptations of the people in the past. The biology of prehistoric and early historic people is studied largely through the analysis of hard tissue. Like the first edition , this heavily revised edition is organized into five parts with contributing chapters written by experts in the field of human skeletal biology. Part One covers theory and application, which leads to Part Two’s discussion of morphological analyses of bone, teeth, and age changes. Following in Part Three are reviews of prehistoric health and disease. Part Four examines chemical and genetic analysis of hard tissues, and Part Five closes with the coverage quantitative methods and population studies. Such in-depth topics as how humans have regarded the dead over time and across cultures, the ethics of skeletal research, and the contributions and advances in research analysis are essential elements contained within this book. Other subjects are:

  • Dental morphology, highlighting methods and characterizing tooth size and shape
  • Investigations in microstructural growth markers in dental tissues
  • Studies based on gross observations of bones, gross observations of teeth, and microscopic studies
  • Bone structure at the histological level and the factors that account for variation
  • Stable isotope analysis, trace element analysis, and the extraction and amplification of ancient DNA
  • Plus many other topics that contain the common thread of determining information about past peoples from their skeletal and dental remains

New or very thoroughly revised content includes:

  • Techniques in the analysis of human skeletal and dental remains
  • Extensive coverage of new technologies
  • Advances in the field of forensic anthropology
  • Enhanced discussion of ethical terms regarding the study of aboriginal peoples’ remains where those people are no longer the dominant culture

Biological Anthropology of the Human Skeleton covers a scope of major topics in human skeletal biology and will be an indispensable research guide to biological anthropologists, osteologists, paleoanthropologists, and archaeologists. But the new, second edition also addresses the need to teach this complex material to a steadily growing population of senior graduates and graduate students. Thus while bolstering the original goal of conveying the excitement of the research to students, the new edition also provides enhanced case examples and discussions for future directions that will make it even more useful in teaching and classroom situations.
